I know. That's the way of the world, isn't it? ...But, you can't focus on the bad ones of the bunch. We've got a lot of good people here, people who will die to protect others, and have. [ She's seen it time and time again. ] Even if you can't rely on everyone, you can rely on some, and those people are worth twice as much, so. No need for cynicism.
[Nate gives him a quiet nod of acknowledgment at the statement, because as far as both of them are concerned, this files will never leave the Drake-Fisher residence. He only pauses in his flipping when Nick interjects again, pointing out a name he doesn't recognize.]
Is...there a reason for that? [He asks, raising an eyebrow.] Because if it's an incognito thing that Rey's working for you, I feel like that's kind of an easy conclusion to draw based on the- you know.
[Nate gestures with one hand at Nick. Rey runs the bar under his unofficial office when they're not living in the same place; Nate assumed she had some affiliation. Nick never struck him as the kind of guy to surround himself with specific people unless he trusted them implicitly.]
[It's certainly something that they have in common - that tendency to keep just that little bit too much back until things become entirely overwhelming.]
Yes, sir. [There's a gentle half-jibe in the second word, but he's sincere.]
And I'll let you know as soon as I'm able to return.
[That, he can do. Ignis' role in life had never prepared him to lead but to support, to guide, to be the person standing at the side of his king offering advice. It's something that he now doubts will actually come to pass, given what he knows, but that doesn't negate the skills he has.]
Nor I. [He admits quietly. Something like the Guard is a delicate balancing act between what people need and what they want.]
But I think that we have far more faith in you than you have in yourself. And diplomacy may serve us far better than brute force.
( He's done his reading, and even if he's dismissed the majority of this as overly complicated nonsense, he does understand the need to keep people safe. To that end, he needs to learn more about this Guard that exists. )
Valentine? Tinya sent me your way for possible Guard duties. I can show you what I can do, but to make it short, I've been trained in defensive and offensive techniques since I was nine. I've undertaken many rescue missions around my galaxy and I've seen and experienced battle too many times to count.
Set me a mission and I will see it done. I know my word doesn't count for much, but my actions will prove it.
[It's going to take him a bit to answer this one. He's familiar with the name, even if only indirectly and by secondhand accounts -- and what he knows isn't exactly favorable in most cases. However, the Guard does need all the hands it can get... and things are different now, leadership and all.]
I'll need you to swing by the Guard headquarters so I can get your papers filled out.
[Isn't exactly favorable is putting it nicely. Anakin is a chaotic mess of a man, but there is something within him that never gives up. Fortunately, to strengthen his resolve, he also has years of training that he can fall back on.]
( Well, let's start with the simple things. Every guardian organisation he's worked for in his existence has had multiple duties, but all that was listed in the newbie guide was their work when the Door opens. So... )
What else do you do to help this city? Is it simply fighting monsters?
We mostly keep the streets clear of monsters, whether it's when the Door opens, the gods bring them in themselves, or we get toted to another planet. We occasionally have to keep the peace when the gods pit us against one another, too.
[Boy, does he not miss those days.]
Other than that, it's about helping people. If someone needs escorting out of the Colosseum, we do it. They put out a distress call, we answer as soon as we can and see what we can do. It takes all kinds, even with us.
[He follows Pell's eyes to his bare, rust-covered hand.]
Oh, this? Nah, I lost the skin and the sensors in this one ages ago. It's more of a nuisance than anything.
[This isn't exactly the line of questioning he expected, but hey, that's what getting to know one another is all about -- and it's something they should probably do if they'll be working together.]
( Well, that's... interesting. Not so much the monsters, but the gods pitting against one another. It doesn't increase his liking of these beings that call this city home any, that much is certain. )
Are monsters the only threat here?
( It sounds like a dream, but even in the smallest villages where they've been hired to do nothing more than rebuild houses, Steak has witnessed humans being as cruel to each other as time is to them. )
[After doing as much as he could to make sure people got inside or to general safety after the move, Scott figures it's a good time to swing by the guard HQ. He was honestly glad to hear about something like this in Hadriel; while he's sure there are probably some reservations about it on a planet that doesn't have real law and order, well, it's also an organization that seems to want to get something done. And after dealing with so much talk, talk, talk, he appreciates action being taken.
Seeing as he spent the whole day running around in the chaos of the move he chooses the next morning to show up, giving a light and rhythmic knock before he enters, not really sure of the protocol — or if there was one. It's hard getting used to doors that didn't have about five security measures or at least an electronic means of opening them. Honestly, door handles. Talk about old school.]
[ This is a courtesy text more than anything, honestly, but Wash could also use some input. He's not a general or anything. ]
I saw your conversation with Hope. You run the guard, right? I figured I should run this by you before I post about it, people need to know what they're dealing with and what we need to do, you've got an infrastructure in place. Whether people respect it or not, you're organized.
[If nothing else, they are organized. Nick will take that as a compliment.]
I agree -- folks need to know what these things are, or might have been, if Hope is right. I was hoping to learn a little more before posting to the general public, since chances are good there are a handful of people out there who'd try to murder the former hosts just to get back at the gods.
