[ There is no pretense. Curufin knows that hostility was coming at him during that discussion, but the grounds for it seemed to shift like quicksand. And it was not all aimed at him, others seemed to be targets as well, at times. ]
You misunderstand me, Nick.
I do not trust the gods. They would roast us all over a slow fire if by doing so they could keep enjoying their meals. Lance is absolutely correct about that.
I was speaking of the case in which we would be facing actual and immanent execution at the hands of these gods. In that case, what would we have to lose? They'd already be involved, all of them. But I am not attached to the idea of pleading our case, since I doubt it would work anyway. It's a long shot.
And I am not calling anyone paranoid because they don't want the gods involved. I was using the word paranoid because some in that discussion were assuming that anyone who disagreed with them had stupid or perhaps even evil motives. That makes no sense to me. That is not reason, that is paranoia. It clouds the atmosphere and makes it next to impossible to exchange ideas in a productive fashion. There was a great scintillation of ideas and creative thinking going on in the room, but it was imperiled. I simply did not want to see it overthrown by those murkier processes.
[ If people believed that they were squarely on the side of the gods, they'd be believing it squarely against the evidence! ]
